Stress or injury can cause the leg to lose "wax" I think, that the leg is the most likely to get injured or scratched. Beetles normal hug the side of the container and could scratch there leg easily (hopeing to interview peter) but this is my guess.
As the image here shows the beetle can turn all black during shipping. It can regenerate in a week or a month
